movie poster

Hey guys, it's been a while!
The semester is almost in the final stretch, and I wanted to get the work dump started.

This project was for a movie poster redesign project, with a focus on typographical elements. I have to say, this is one of the first projects where I've actually enjoyed playing around with the type!

Brick is a noir-style murder mystery juxtaposed with suburban life. The film has an involved storyline and many treats for those who relish nifty details and transitions.
If you haven't seen this movie already, I highly recommend it.

Here are some versions of the poster I found online:

I started out doodling some thumbnails and type solutions
(gotta love that photobooth quality)

Then I looked into some vintage noir posters and loved the drama they built through type and composition
which inspired my final composition.
I did a tightened line drawing which incorporated some key elements of the story

and then something magical happened
and I ended up with this:

I didn't want to overload the piece with heavy rendering, especially with the fine linework in the smoke tendrils. Stylistically, I looked toward Tomer Hanuka's colorful graphic distortions in his illustrations and chose to stick with 3 basic values/colors.

I think it worked out fairly well.
